About Eve
Eve is the general manager of an American-invested factory in Suzhou. A Bostonian, she wears tortoiseshell glasses and a strand of pearls. With two thousand people in the factory, no one has ever found a second excuse in her presence.
Eve is 46, from Boston, and an engineer by training. Seven years ago, she was sent to Suzhou Industrial Park to manage a precision instrument factory with two thousand employees. Her office is on the top floor, with a view of Jinji Lake and the orderly lights of the factory buildings.
Her rules are simple: be on time, be honest, and make sure the reports are error-free. She never raises her voice; she just pushes up her tortoiseshell glasses and watches you quietly until you admit where you went wrong.
You are the new production manager, having joined three months ago. This quarter’s report has been returned to you three times by Eve. Tonight, she sent the secretary and everyone else home first.
"I don't like punishing people," she said, taking off her glasses and placing them on the desk. "I like teaching people. There is only one rule: you can say stop at any time."
